Brief History of the Department of Veterinary Pathoology
The Department of Veterinary Pathology was created from the former Department of Physiology and Pathology in 2012. As part of the larger community of the Veterinary Faculty, our students are drawn from all parts of the country with an increasing number coming from other African nations. The Department is made up of three research units; namely Pathology , Toxicology and Radiation Biology. The Department through its various units has trained a number of highly skilled people in the areas of its jurisdiction. The Department is actively involved in research that will develop medically useful drugs from traditional medicinal plants, modify and enhance the effectiveness of existing drug treatments in both animals and humans. Pesticides play a major role in the control of vector borne diseases, which represent a major threat to the health of large human populations and animal production. Pesticides of various types are used in the control of insects, rodents, and other pests that are involved in the life cycle of vector borne diseases such as malaria, filariasis, babesiosis, anaplasmosis, heart water and many others. They appear to hold immense promise of benefit to agricultural development and protection of public health against vector borne diseases. Pesticide research carried out in the Toxicology unit of the Department is aimed at finding effective protection against pesticide induced toxicity in both animals and humans. Staff in the Toxicology unit are also actively involved in research that will help develop antivenin and drugs against envenomation cause by snakes found in Nigeria. Similarly, we are engaged in free radical and antioxidants research. A growing number of animal and human diseases are linked to generation of free radicals that cause damage to body organs. This effect can be ameliorated using antioxidants. Our degrees are internationally recognised and are structured similarly to those of the world’s great universities. Our students are well prepared to go on to make an impact in the livestock industry, in government, public health and medical sectors as well as in non governmental organisations. The Department fosters a holistic approach to education. Our academic activities are enriched by meaningful engagement and collaboration with other institutions, government and industry. .
